ABOUT THE COURSE
This training is available for individuals (such as doulas and nurses) or perinatal health workers who want to learn lactation support skills. This is an
exciting, interactive 3-day 21-hour course which will provide you with basic knowledge, skills and tools for assisting pregnant women and new mothers who want to breastfeed. Cultural awareness, communication skills, and positioning the baby at the breast are just a few of the things you will learn. We offer certification referrals after completion of the course. Certification is optional. Requirements are obtained after the course. No prior experience with breastfeeding is required.

TRAINING DESCRIPTION
Purpose of the Course
The purpose of this course is to give women who want to support other women in breastfeeding their babies the skills and information to do so and to address barriers to breastfeeding initiation and duration.
Increasing breastfeeding initiation and duration in the United States is one of the Healthy People 2020 objectives for the public’s health. Breastfeeding has numerous benefits for mothers and children including lowering rates of infant mortality and morbidity, enhances bonding between mother and infant, and decreases women’s risk of breast, cervical and uterine cancer.
Who Should Attend?
Aspiring lactation educators, aspiring lactation consultants, perinatal case managers, prenatal and postpartum home visitors, community health promoters (Promatoras), Certified Perinatal Health Workers (CPHWs), parent educators, Community Health Outreach Workers (CHOWs), health educators, doulas, childbirth educators, childbirth assistants, midwife assistants, midwifery apprentices, aspiring midwives, student midwives, student nurses, nurses, medical students, mothers, grandmothers, any woman who wants to help other women breastfeed.
Course Objectives:
By the end of this training, participants will be able to:
1. Discuss common cultural biases and differences and their impact upon the counselor-client relationship.
2. Demonstrate the Three Step Strategy for communication.
3. Describe three benefits of breastfeeding to infants and mothers.
4. Describe the importance of father’s support in breastfeeding success and describe two ways to involve fathers in supporting the breastfeeding dyad.
5. Describe the barriers that confront breastfeeding mothers.
6. Describe the nutritional components of breast-milk and their purpose.
7. Describe the phases and types of breast-milk and their purpose.
8. Identify the anatomical structures of the lactating breast.
9. Describe the role of hormones in the physiology of breastfeeding.
10. Describe basic breastfeeding management.
11. Demonstrate three ways to position baby at the breast.
12. Demonstrate techniques for assisting with latching on of infants.
13. Describe four problems encountered by breastfeeding mothers and four remedies for these problems.
14. Demonstrate pumping and storage of breastmilk and describe safe milk handling guidelines.
15. Describe three special situations that may inhibit breastfeeding and describe three ways to support breastfeeding mothers.
1. Pass certification exam with score of 80%.
2. Assist three mothers with lactation support and provide three self-reports and three client reports.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTORS
Cordelia Hanna-Cheruiyot, MPH, CHES, CCE, CBA
Cordelia is a Certified Childbirth Educator, Lactation Educator Counselor and Certified Birth Assistant who since 1991 has taught Childbirth Preparation Classes and Breastfeeding
Education to hundreds of couples in private practice, clinics, public health, hospital and community settings, and attended births as a Primary Midwife Under Supervision, Assistant Midwife and Labor Companion/Monitrice in homes, birth centers and hospitals. Cordelia Cordelia was certified by Le Leche League International to train breastfeeding peer counselors. She conducts trainings for perinatal health workers, Doulas and Breastfeeding Peer Counselors and is a co-creator, with Geraldine Perry-Williams, MSN, PHN, of the Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Training and Certification Program which she has taught since 2002.Cordelia worked with African-American women for seven years on a state-funded program to reduce health disparities and initiated and managed a Breastfeeding Peer Counselor and Volunteer Doula Program for seven years at public health department. She is passionate about promoting midwives, doulas, promotras (community health promoters) and breastfeeding peer counselors to address ethnic health disparities such as low rates of breastfeeding, high rates of prematurity and cesarean section, and to reduce maternal mortality globally.
Cordelia obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree in Theatre and Dance from Indiana University in 1986. In 2008, she received her Masters in Public Health (MPH) in Health Education and Promotion/Maternal Child Health from Loma Linda University. She is a Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES), the gold standard for professional health educators, accredited by NCHEC.
She is also a wife and mother of two home-born, breastfed and attachment-parented children who are now capable, bright young adults.
Sayida Peprah, has a Doctorate of Psychology in Clinical Psychology, with a Multicultural Clinical-Community Emphasis, from
the California School of Professional Psychology at Alliant International University. Dr. Peprah’s background, both academically and in the field, afford her unique competence in instructing courses, counseling and consulting, from a multicultural perspective. Dr. Peprah has a strong belief and background in cultural competence and, in effort to expand this, regularly participates in international cultural immersion studies. Previously, she has traveled to Ghana, Mexico, Egypt and India, studying mental health approaches, indigenous culture and local spiritual traditions. Dr. Peprah is dedicated to contributing her academic and personal expertise, both in the field, as a counselor/therapist and as an instructor/facilitator in academic, non-profit, government and corporate sectors.
