Childbirth Preparation Classes

Group Four Week Series or Private Sessions

Prepare for Homebirth or Natural Childbirth in the Hospital or Birth Center, make informed childbirth choices, develop trust in birth, and improve your confidence for giving birth and breastfeeding and cultivate acceptance of unexpected outcomes.

Group classes are 3-1/2 hours per session. Weekend classes offered. Email or call for the dates of upcoming series.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

Class One: Understanding Birth

  • Preventing premature birth
  • Eating right for healthy pregnancy
  • Coping with common discomforts of pregnancy
  • How your body works in labor and birth
  • How labor begins
  • The phases and stages of birth
  • When to go to the hospital or call the midwife to come to your home if you are planning a homebirth

Class Two: Coping with Labor

  • Breathing techniques
  • Positions for easier, faster and more comfortable labor
  • Support techniques for birth partners
  • Positions for effective pushing
  • Trusting your body's wisdom
  • The benefits of natural childbirth or "physiological childbirth"
  • Orgasmic birth - How can you too can have one!
  • The role of the Doula--your partner in acheiving the birth you want

Class Three: Making Informed Choices

  • Choosing the place of birth: hospital, home or birth center
  • Choosing your birth support provider: midwife or obstetrician
  • Clarifying your needs and wants for childbirth
  • Pain medication options: epidurals and analgesics
  • Advantages and disadvantages of medical procedures (induction of labor, electronic fetal monitoring, episiotomy, etc) and their effect on labor, mother and baby
  • Tips for communicating with your doctor, midwife or labor and delivery nurse
  • Informed consent and refusal--understanding your rights
  • Birth by cesearean and Vaginal Birth After Cesearean
  • Creating a birth plan

Class Four: Postpartum, Your Amazing Newborn and Breastfeeding

  • Postpartum adjustments: physical and emotional
  • All about your amazing newborn baby
  • Newborn medical procedures: benefits and risks
  • Breastfeeding: Making it work

Private Childbirth Preparation Classes

Private sessions are also available. Customized to suit your interests and budget taught in the intimacy and comfort of your home. Refresher courses, sibling preparation also available. Breastfeeding consultation. Call or email to schedule your class.

This session, which is usually 2 hours, taught in your home or by email or phone, will help you to:

About the Instructor

Cordelia Hanna-Cheruiyot, MPH, CHES, CCE, CBA

Certified Childbirth Educator and Certified Birth Assistant, accredited by ALACE, who, since 1991, has taught hundreds of couples and attended births as an Assistant Midwife and Doula/Monitrice in hospitals, homes and birth centers. She has a Mastcordelia.jpgers in Public Health (MPH) in Health Education and Promotion/Maternal Child Health from Loma Linda University. She is a Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) acredited by NCHEC. She is also a wife and mother of two home-born children.
